Honda aim to fight for title in 2006
Yasuhiro Wada, President of Honda Racing Development, is hoping the Japanese squad will unleash their full potential in 2006 following a frustrating 2005 season with the BAR team
"Last season was a bit disappointing and it's fair to say that we struggled to overcome the 2005 aerodynamic regulations and never managed to get the best out of our Michelin tyres," said Wada.
"Engine-wise we had some early issues but by the end of the season our engine was really strong and very reliable.
"There's no doubt we have the capability to win, we just have to harness all potential areas for improvement. Next season we have a new V8 engine regulation, which will be a challenge but it's also an opportunity... and we hope it will be a big opportunity for us.
"It's also important for us to be strong right from the start. Historically, this team has been good when it comes to improving during the season, now the key is to have a good start so we can build from there."
Honda have taken full control of the BAR team and are expected to race under their own name next season.
Although BAR endured a difficult 2005 season after coming second to Ferrari in the previous Championship, Wada is confident the team will be able to start challenging for the title next year.
"This year's priority was for Honda to get back to winning races but, unfortunately, we didn't fulfil that objective," Wada said. "Next year we'd like to start challenging for the Championship and we would like to start winning as soon as possible.
"That's what we'll be pushing for in 2006."
Wada played down suggestions that the day-to-day running of the team will change under Honda's ownership.
"There won't be a huge difference - we are already very focused on winning," he added. "Internally, though, there will be more co-ordination between R&D in Japan and our technical teams here in Brackley so more resources will become available. That's one of the main benefits of this move."
