Heidfeld in talks over Renault drive

The 33-year-old German was called up to replace Pedro de la Rosa at Sauber after Monza, and has revealed that Renault is his target for a full-time drive next season.

"For next year there are many seats already gone," he said. "I am still in talks with various teams, [including Renault] as Eric Boullier has confirmed, and that would be the best opportunity."

If Renault does not retain Vitaly Petrov for a second season, Heidfeld admitted it's likely that the team would need his replacement to bring financial backing.

"I think it is fair to say that talent is not the only thing they are looking for. There are other teams as well, but I say Renault because Boullier said so."

Heidfeld added that he is not considering drives outside of F1 at present.

"I will look for Formula 1," he said. "I think those other series become interesting at a point, but not yet.

"At the moment it's my last race for Sauber, but I've said that before and I've come back so you never know what's going to happen."
