Hamilton proud to be in Silverstone lore

World champion Lewis Hamilton said he is proud to have played a part in the history of Silverstone as a Formula 1 circuit as the venue prepares to host potentially its last grand prix on Sunday

The McLaren driver was the most recent British winner at the track following his dominant performance in the rain a year ago, which he cited as his favourite Silverstone memory.

"My favourite Silverstone recollection will always be last year," he said. "I am proud to be here, to have been able to race here and proud that I was able to be a part of history."

Hamilton, who ended Friday's free practice in seventh, added that while he did not expect to be in the running to repeat his victory he was still thoroughly enjoying driving in front of his home crowd.

"For me it's already turned out to be one of the best weekends of the year," he said. "Because firstly I am at my home grand prix and the fans are incredible here.

"I've seen the support since the first lap I did today, and every time I walk out of my garage or come by I can see them supporting me.

"My girlfriend has arrived and surprised me, and my family are all here. So it couldn't be better for me."

"I'm just living in the moment and enjoying the whole weekend."
