Hamilton not rushing F1 move
Lewis Hamilton has insisted he will only make the step up to Formula One when both he and McLaren believe he is ready
Hamilton's pre-season testing form has marked himself out as one of the favourites to win this year's GP2 title which, if achieved, would put him in a prime position to emulate Nico Rosberg and land a Formula One drive.
McLaren have supported Briton Hamilton throughout his racing career since he was successful in the McLaren-backed 'Champions of the Future' karting series in the mid-1990s.
He has been successful progressing up the motor racing ladder, winning both the Formula Renault UK and F3 Euroseries titles.
McLaren boss Ron Dennis said last month that it is unlikely that Hamilton's first Formula One drive would be with them, but he could be loaned out to another team.
"I'm young and whether I have one or two years in GP2, I don't know," Hamilton told autosport.com. "People try to go to F1 as soon as they get the opportunity, at such a young age, but it should be when you are ready.
"If I and McLaren don't feel I'm ready at the end of the season I won't move up. They will make sure I move up when I'm ready."
This year's GP2 series begins at Valencia this weekend.
