Hakkinen wins: Lap-by-lap Report

Lap-by-lap report of Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona

Start/Lap 1: Hakkinen away first, Coulthard up to second ahead of Irvine. Villeneuve up from sixth to third. Schumacher in fourth. Gene left on the grid.

Lap 3: Villeneuve in third holding up Ferraris, Hakkinen and Coulthard being allowed to get away.

Lap 5: Hakkinen three seconds ahead of Coulthard.

Lap 6: Schumacher more than 10 seconds behind Hakkinen in fourth. Can't get past Villeneuve.

Lap 7: Hakkinen set fastest lap of 1.25.209. Race order top 10 - Hakkinen, Coulthard, Villeneuve, M Schumacher, Irvine, Trulli, Alesi, R Schumacher, Frentzen, Barrichello, Herbert.

Lap 11: No movement at the top in race order since lap 1.

Lap 15: Hakkinen now 21.9 seconda ahead of Villeneuve in third. M Schumacher staying with Villeneuve, but still unable to get past.

Lap 18: De la Rosa first in for pit stop (three-stop strategy for Arrows driver?).
Hakkinen laps Badoer.and Panis.
Herbert in pits.

Lap 19: Wurz into pits.

Lap 20: Hakkinen 6.1s ahead of Coulthard and 26.0s ahead of Villeneuve.

Lap 23: Irvine from fifth place into pits (7.8s)

Lap 24: Hakkinen pits from lead and out in 6.8s. Rejoins race in second behind Coulthard.

Lap 25: Villeneuve and M Schumacher both pit, and Schumacher ges away first.
Alex Zanardi retires when coming into pits (gearbox).

Lap 26: Hill into pits.

Lap 27: Coulthard into pits, overshoots mechanics and loses time.
Frentzen, Alesi and Barrichello all into pits.

Lap 28: Race order: Hakkinen, Coulthard, Alesi, R Schumacher, Irvine, Villeneuve.

Lap 29: Alesi goes off onto the grass and retires. M Schumacher sets fastest lap of 1.24.982.

Everyone up to 13th now lapped by Hakkinen. Eighteen driver left, those out are Gene, Panis, Zanardi, Alesi.

Lap 33: M Schumacher beginning to catch Coulthard, who is held up by Salo. Coulthard passes Salo, then allowed past Fisichella. M Schumacher making a charge up the field.

Lap 35: M Schumacher now just six seconds behind Coulthard, and 20.7s behind Hakkinen.

Lap 36: Frentzen retires.

Lap 38: M Schumacher within sight of Coulthard now, only 4.3s behind, and within 14s of race leader Hakkinen.
Ferrari mechanics preparing.

Lap40: Villeneuve into pits, mechanics remove element from rear wing, Lap-by-lap report of Spanish Grand Prix in Barcelona.
Herbert retires.

Lap 42: M Schumacher pits in 7s.

Lap 44: Hakkinen pits, Coulthard leads and Hakkinen rejoins in second.

Lap 45: Coulthard pits and manages to get out just ahead of M Schumacher.

Lap 47: Race order - Hakkinen, Coulthard, M Schumacher, Irvine, Hill, R Schumacher.

Lap 50: Fisichella retires.
Coulthard managing to move away from M Schumacher, and now ahead by 4.2s. Hakkinen leads Coulthard by 11.6s.

Lap 53: Badoer spins and retires.

Lap 59:Coulthard very close to Hakkinen (4.8s), with M Schumacher just behind him as well. Lost some time overtaking Takagi.

Lap 60: Hill refusing to Coulthard through, allowing M Schumacher to catch up.
Hill blue flagged and Coulthard goes through.

Lap 62: Race order: Hakkinen, Coulthard, M Schumacher, Irvine, R Schumacher, Trulli.

Lap 63: Schumacher laps Barrichello, and Hill goes through as well to take seventh.

Lap 64: Final lap.

Hakkinen wins, Coulthard second,M Schumacher third, Irvine fourth, R Schumacher fifth, Trulli sixth.
