Grapevine: Hamilton earns BRDC Gold Star award

Lewis Hamilton has earned the British Racing Drivers' Club's Gold Star award for the most successful Briton in international racing this season

Although Hamilton missed out on the Formula One title in Brazil - appeal outcome permitting - he was still able to clinch the Gold Star ahead of IRL IndyCar and Indianapolis 500 champion Dario Franchitti, whose IndyCar rival Dan Wheldon has won the honour for the previous two seasons.

American Le Mans Series GT1 co-champion Allan McNish presently holds third place in the Gold Star points system, but he could be overhauled by World Touring Car Championship drivers Andy Priaulx and James Thompson as they still have their season finale in Macau to come.

The BRDC's Silver Star for British achievement in domestic series has been clinched by British Touring Car Championship runner-up Jason Plato, who will become the first man to take the honour three times after his previous successes in 2001 and 2004.

Both Stars will be presented at the BRDC's Annual Awards at The Savoy in London on 3 December.
