Glock outshines team-mates

German test driver Timo Glock was quicker than both of Jordan's regular drivers during free practice for Sunday's Spanish Grand Prix at Barcelona. The youngster admitted afterwards that it was a low fuel run but nevertheless he ended the day 16th fastest overall, just 0.6s off of David Coulthard's McLaren

Nick Heidfeld and Giorgio Pantano concentrated on set-up and race strategy and while the German was happy with the aerodynamic improvements made to the EJ14 for Barcelona, the Italian had a difficult day. But Glock the day was perfect.

"In the first session I went a bit slower in the beginning because in Imola I spun off after 14 laps or so," he said. "I decided I would go a little bit easier here and do a good job for the team. So it went well and step-by-step we found a better set-up.

"During second practice it started to rain lightly and for me it was difficult to know how fast to go in these conditions. At the end my timed lap was really good. I have no experience of driving F1 with low fuel so my last run was a bit conservative."

Heidfeld reckons that the team can improve the Cosworth-powered Jordan further before tomorrow's qualifying sessions: "The changes on the car that we have here - mainly on the aerodynamic side - seem to have helped, judging by our gaps to the other cars. But I'm still sure that we can improve the car for tomorrow. We are still not where we want to be but I think we have made a good step forward."

Pantano was the slowest of the Jordan drivers and 0.8s behind Heidfeld on a circuit he has visited before. "I'm not really happy with how my sessions went today," said the Italian. "It's my first time here in Formula 1 and I need to learn a little bit more about how to find the limits. We can improve tomorrow for sure. I have to improve too."
