Gerhard Berger Q&A

BMW Williams is now firmly established as the team most likely to challenge Ferrari, but after Ralf Schumacher's superb win in Malaysia it has not been plain sailing for the Anglo-German alliance. The package clearly had the potential to win in Brazil, but in Imola Ferrari was in a class of its own, and this on a long straights/big braking track that seemed to favour Williams last year. Adam Cooper spoke to BMW's Gerhard Berger about the current situation

"Just keep working. It was important to get the second position in the teams, and that I think we prove again today. But once you set your goal and you get to this position, of course you look for the next goal, and the next goal will be to catch the Ferrari. It's going to be quite difficult."

"I think it was bad for the Ferrari, last year, if I'm honest..."

"I think it's better in all areas. Firstly Michelin are in their second year, so they have some experience, and they're going to do an even better job than last year. I think we've built a great engine, which has a lot of potential. We had already last year a strong engine, but this year's engine is going to be even stronger. We improved reliability in a big way. Williams built a good car, even it looked at the first moment a bit too conservative, it shows now that it's got potential in it. I think if we can improve a little bit the aerodynamics, then the whole package is very strong. And we have two very competitive drivers. So I see us in good shape, but even so if you watch the shape of Ferrari, we need a little bit of time to catch them."

"I think it's strong group of people working there. In F1 you always have a team having a high performance in a certain area, and then coming and going, coming and going. I think at the moment it's a big Ferrari era, and after 21 years we're all happy to seem them achieving wins again. Of course Michael is a very strong part of the success. All that we are trying to do is to see that the next era comes to us."

"I personally believe in this, yes.

"I think it's positive. You always have a good comparison, and you have two top teams giving feedback to Michelin, and development speeds up. At the end of the day we shouldn't forget that Michelin is just one year there, and they had an unbelievable first season. They are racers, they are very competitive, and I think they are the right partner for us. And I think everybody in the team thinks the same."

"That's promising. At the end of last year we said our priority has to be reliability, because that's where we were really weak last year - not just on BMW's side, but on the Williams side."

"We have very good pitstops. The team has improved a lot, the reliability has improved a lot, and on this side we are coming fine. I think performance wise we are still not up there. I see things coming, but if it's enough, I don't know."

"It's absolutely a Ferrari circuit, I think. We're going to have some circuits where we're really struggling, and that's Barcelona, Budapest, places like that."
