George 'committed' to retaining F1

Ecclestone had recently suggested that he was indifferent about whether F1 remained in the United States. Many had viewed his comments as part of a bargaining tool ahead of discussions to secure the race's future.

In a statement issued at Indianapolis on Friday afternoon, George said that he was 'committed' to retaining F1.

Talks about whether the race continues will take place after this year's event, when George can gauge the reaction of American fans following the controversial mass withdrawal of teams in 2005.

"We appreciate the interest and support from everyone who has inquired about the future of this event" he said.

"Many months ago, Bernie and I agreed to wait until the conclusion of the 2006 event to evaluate our future together. We expect to do that in the coming weeks.

"The good news is we enjoy the partnership that has been forged and are committed to working toward continuing to build on the foundation that has been laid over the last seven years."
