Gene Fastest at Jerez - Day 2

Spanish test driver Marc Gene finished on top of the lap times with a low fuel dash right at the end of proceedings after a complete day of long run tests on a very sunny second day of testing at the Jerez circuit

The Ferrari tester, at the wheel of the F2004M, continued focusing on set-up work and tyre testing for Bridgestone, completing 114 laps. Bridgestone's management had asked Ferrari if one or both of their race drivers, Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello, could return to Spain to assist with tyre testing, but were rebuffed.

McLaren's Alexander Wurz was second quickest in the MP4-19B car, with the Austrian's day finishing earlier than planned after suffering an engine breakdown. The driver was running in the old car as the team hasn't yet been able to build a 20 large enough to accommodate his lanky frame.

Anthony Davidson and Enrique Bernoldi kicked off BAR's testing programme for the week, with the Briton driving the 007 while the Brazilian was at the wheel of the black hybrid 2004 car.

Bernoldi was the busiest man on track with 122 laps, and a large number of those were spent with the Briton hot on his tail - Davidson was working on aero solutions for running in the dirty air flowing from the car in front, with Bernoldi spending most of the day running as an air block.

Toyota was scheduled to test today but did not take to the track; they will start working tomorrow instead, along with Renault, Williams, and Ferrari's other tester Luca Badoer in the all new F2005.

Today's times:
