Gascoyne: early launch will pay off
Toyota's technical director Mike Gascoyne believes the Japanese squad's decision to launch their car early will pay off for them
The Cologne-based squad unveiled their TF106 on Monday and have already been testing it at Barcelona this week.
The team are working on the development of the new V8 engine to be used next season as well as on familiarising with the Bridgestone tyres after using Michelin rubber since 2002.
Gascoyne reckons testing with their new car will give them an edge over their rivals.
"For us the fact that we are testing early we can work on the reliability of the new car and the V8 engine, and we've got time to fix any major issues," said Gascoyne. "Plus the fact that our development work with Bridgestone is with the new car, which will avoid any further changes.
"I think this gives us a good advantage over our competitors, combined with the ability to introduce last minute changes up to the first race."
The technical director also expressed his satisfaction after the first two days of testing with the new TF106.
"The conclusion for us is it was very positive. We have made good progress," he said. "The laptimes look competitive, which is pleasing, but I think there is still a lot to come from improving the car further."
Ricardo Zonta and Ralf Schumacher will continue with Toyota's testing programme this week, the German taking over today from teammate Jarno Trulli.
