World Champion Michael Schumacher set the pace for Ferrari in Friday's second practice session for the German Grand Prix as he shaded his rivals in hot conditions at Hockenheim.

World Champion Michael Schumacher set the pace for Ferrari in Friday's second practice session for the German Grand Prix as he shaded his rivals in hot conditions at Hockenheim.

German Schumacher, racing in front of his home fans for the second time this year, finished with a time of 1:15.001 to put himself 0.044 ahead of the second-placed McLaren-Mercedes of Finn Kimi Raikkonen.

Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya put his Williams-BMW third despite an off-track excursion at turn 12 early in the session while Briton Jenson Button finished fourth for BAR-Honda.

Brazilian Antonio Pizzonia, making his debut for Williams as a replacement for the injured Ralf Schumacher, finished around three tenths of a second slower than his teammate in fifth but also had a spin.

Briton Anthony Davidson finished sixth in the second BAR-Honda with his Japanese teammate Takuma Sato ensured all three cars made it into the top ten by finishing seventh. Spaniard Fernando Alonso was eighth in the lead Renault.

Brazilian Rubens Barrichello finished ninth in the second Ferrari with Ricardo Zonta putting the old Toyota in the top ten, 1.199 seconds slower than Schumacher.

Scot David Coulthard had a difficult session, leaving the track at turns one and six and spinning twice at turn two as he tried to push his new McLaren MP4-19B machine to the limits.

Italian Jordan driver Giorgio Pantano was forced to pull into the pits late in the session after losing part of his car on track while Button parked on the start-finish straight at the end of the session.
