Free practice 4: DC gets focussed

David Coulthard brushed off a disastrous first day of practice to finish the fourth and final free practice session fastest overall, 0.203s faster than world champion-elect Michael Schumacher

The Scot had lost the majority of Friday's pair of free practice sessions after damaging his McLaren-Mercedes' undertray on a modified kerb. But despite the lack of set-up time, Coulthard came out fighting on Saturday and showed he will not relinquish his claims to the world title without a fight.

Schumacher failed to improve on his third session time after a grassy off and a spin, but still finished nearly two tenths better than Ferrari team mate Rubens Barrichello.

Nick Heidfeld's Sauber-Petronas finished the session an excellent fourth, just 0.558s behind Coulthard, but a little under two tenths quicker than Mika Hakkinen's McLaren.

Adding to the variety in the top six, Jarno Trulli rounded out the top half-dozen with the best Honda time in his Jordan. Behind him, Ralf Schumacher spun into the Turn 9 gravel at the top of the session, but finished seventh, ahead of team mate Juan Pablo Montoya, Jaguar's Eddie Irvine and - get this! - the Benetton-Renault of Giancarlo Fisichella.

Fisichella's time was just 1.250s slower than Coulthard and was further proof that hard work on the B201's packaging is beginning to pay off. His team mate Jenson Button finished the session 17th, two slots ahead of a very promising Fernando Alonso. The Minardi man had been as high as 16th in the opening minutes of the session.
