Fisichella in Talks with Sauber

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella is talking to Sauber about a possible move from Jordan for 2004, the Swiss team confirmed today.

Italian Giancarlo Fisichella is talking to Sauber about a possible move from Jordan for 2004, the Swiss team confirmed today.

A Sauber spokesman said at the British Grand Prix that Fisichella visited the Formula One team's factory at Hinwil on Wednesday as part of "informal discussions about the future."

Sauber's current drivers, Germans Nick Heidfeld and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, are both out of contract at the end of the season while Fisichella is looking to join a more competitive team.

"The drivers are talking to other teams and the team is looking at options," the spokesman said. "As part of that process, Giancarlo was in Hinwil on Wednesday."

Sauber are currently two points behind Jordan in the Championship, with nine points, but have scored in more races than Jordan who would only have one without Fisichella's lucky victory at Interlagos.

The Italian dreams of driving for Ferrari but the champions recently announced that Michael Schumacher had signed a new contract to the end of 2006 while Brazilian Rubens Barrichello has a contract for next season.

Sauber do have Ferrari engines and have also been linked to Ferrari's Brazilian test driver Felipe Massa, who drove for the Swiss team last year.

Fisichella, 30, has openly expressed his frustration with Jordan, despite winning this year's Brazilian Grand Prix for the team when that accident-strewn race was stopped early. Jordan have said they will not stand in Fisichella's way if a better opportunity comes along.
