Fisichella hopeful Renault can catch BMW

Giancarlo Fisichella believes his Renault team will be able to catch BMW Sauber in terms of pace, although the Italian admits it will be difficult to beat the German squad in the standings

Fisichella hopeful Renault can catch BMW

"It's possible, yes," Fisichella told reporters at the Nurburgring. "Today we worked with a new front wing and it's got good potential.

"But it's quite different in terms of balance so we need to find a new set-up for the new front wing. At the moment, it's pretty similar but we're working on it.

"At the start of the season, we were 1.5 second slower than McLaren and Ferrari and now at some races we're half a second, six tenths," he added.

BMW are 25 points ahead of world champions Renault in the standings with eight races remaining.

The French squad, who are yet to finish on the podium this year, have scored just 31 points in the first nine races of the season.

However, the team have been making steady progress since the Monaco Grand Prix, which Fisichella reckons was the inflection point of Renault's season.

"When we changed the front wing in Monaco - there the car was better and more consistent, better grip overall better driveability, it was better," he added.

"It still needs to find some overall grip, especially in high-speed corners with understeering and better stability under braking but we are going in the right direction and the team is really pushing.

"We can improve a little bit more than BMW. And it won't be easy to catch them in terms of points, but it's possible."
