Fisichella holds get-out clause

Sauber's star signing Giancarlo Fisichella has been told by his new boss Peter Sauber that the Swiss team would not stand in his way should he receive an offer to drive for one of the "top three" teams in Formula 1, even in 2005. This despite the Italian agreeing a two-year contract with the Petronas-badged customer Ferrari powered team

Speaking after his first visit to the team's base in Hinwil since joining Sauber, where he had a seat fitting, Fisichella said: "I wanted to show Sauber that I am committed to working with them.

"But who knows what the future will bring? Peter Sauber has said that, if there was an offer from one of the top teams, I would be able to leave. It is just the way Kimi Raikkonen was allowed to get out of his contract with Sauber to join McLaren-Mercedes."

Fisichella quit the Jordan-Ford team in an effort to find a more competitive drive in late summer and endured a disappointing season despite winning the Brazilian Grand Prix in April. Fisichella has made no secret of his desire to drive for a frontline team in Formula 1 and believes that signing for the well-funded Sauber squad is the perfect springboard to make such a jump.
