Ferrari to aim even higher in 2002
Ferrari technical director Ross Brawn has made it clear that his team wants to top its dominant season with even greater success in 2002
The Scuderia blitzed both the constructors' and drivers' championships this year, winning nine of the 17 races along the way. Michael Schumacher won his fourth world title by a huge 58-point margin over closest rival David Coulthard, whose McLaren team lost out by a mammoth 77 points in the constructors' standings.
But Brawn said that Ferrari wants more. "It was a fantastic season, but you've always got to try to do better," he said after Sunday's Japanese Grand Prix. "We won nine races, and we want to win 10. We won it by I don't know how many points, but we want to win it by even more. You just have to try harder."
Brawn is confident that Schumacher will be highly motivated to win a fifth title next year and also hopes that team mate Rubens Barrichello can score race victories, something he has failed to do this year.
But he admits that the competition is likely to be stronger than it was this season. "I think it will be very strong opposition next year, right from the first race," said Brawn. "Really this year Williams didn't get going until part way through the season, McLaren had a very difficult start to the season. I honestly can't see next year being quite so straight forward, but I see no reason why we shouldn't be very competitive, and still able to win races."
