Ferrari boss 'vilified' by Irvine's performance
Ferrari President Luca di Montezemolo claims Eddie Irvine's recent performances have justified signing him.
'Irvine is doing what we have asked him to do, what we hired him to do, and we are pleased with the choice we've made,' he said. 'I was personally vilified, and I mean that, for having signed Irvine in the first place.
'Now, thanks partly to having a car as exceptional as the Ferrari is today, he's reached levels of performance which have amazed a lot of people - but not me.'
This year, Irvine has put in a strong performance for Ferrari, winning the first race of the season in Australia, and storming into third place in Canada, after a collision with McLaren's David Coulthard on lap 40 dropped him down to eighth position.
The Ferrari number two is believed to be looking for equal status within the Maranello-based team, and the chance to fight for the championship.
But, di Montezemolo refused to comment on rumours that Irvine could seek a drive elsewhere if his wish is not granted.
'I'm not taking any decisions as President of Ferrari because it's the middle of June and there are a long series of factors to be considered.'
