F1 boss Bernie Ecclestone now hopeful of new Monza deal
Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has hinted at signs of progress in his talks with Monza to secure the future of the Italian Grand Prix
Ecclestone warned earlier this year that he was likely to drop the event after 2016 because he was unhappy with the commercial terms of its contract.
That threat prompted an outcry from fans and drivers - and former grand prix driver Ivan Capelli is now leading a push to sort out a fresh deal after being elected to the board of directors of the Automobile Club of Milan.
Ecclestone met with representatives from the track at Monza on Saturday to continue talks about a fresh deal, and admitted that there were now some positive signs.
He did make it clear, however, that the race promoters would need to ensure the circuit offers a financial package that is on par with other European races.
"I spoke to them this morning and the bottom line is simple: all we want is for Monza to have the same terms as all the other European races," he explained.
"I would like to cross the name out any [other race] contract they would like: and put in the name 'Monza'."
When asked if Monza had a chance, he said: "I hope so. They seem competent people."
