Ecclestone backs return to slicks

Wide slick tyres, coupled with a dramatic reduction in downforce, could make a return to Formula 1 as part of a revised package of technical regulations in 2004, according to this week's AUTOSPORT magazine

Formula 1 supremo Bernie Ecclestone has come out in favour of the changes, which are to de tabled in a meeting of grand prix teams on December 4. Ecclestone and FIA president Max Mosley are determined to make changes to the technical regulations to help liven up the Formula 1 'show'.

Ecclestone has long been in favour of a return to slick tyres, and has told Italy's Sport Auto Moto magazine: "In the wet, the cars manage to stay close behind each other. So we need more mechanical grip and less aerodynamics.

"It would be a good idea to reduce the size of the front wing and rear wings to balance the car, and you'd probably have to get rid of the diffusers. You'd reduce the aerodynamic downforce and increase mechanical grip - with wider wheels and slick tyres."
