Drivers Propose Low-Fuel Qualifying

Formula One drivers have proposed a new qualifying system to FIA president Max Mosley, which would see a return to low-fuel runs as well as have the option of a second flying lap, Autosport magazine reveals

Mosley has sent the drivers' proposal to all Formula One team principals, outlining the format and requesting their view. According to that letter, the drivers' preferred format would continue the existing single-lap qualifying, but with changes to make it more competitive.

The starting order of the one-hour session will be determined by the time set in final free practice on Saturday morning, with the fastest driver qualifying last.

Furthermore, qualifying will be run on low fuel load and each driver will have the opportunity to run a second flying lap - although all flying laps must be completed within the qualifying hour-long session.

"They wanted the opportunity of a second lap on the limit, with the first lap time secure and, again, no traffic," Mosley wrote. "The public, too, might welcome an opportunity to see the drivers go flat out for a single uninhibited lap with low fuel."

Mosley states the proposal was unanimously supported by all drivers and presented to him in his meeting with the Grand Prix Drivers Association (GPDA) in Cannes ten days ago.

The FIA president asked the team principals to notify him if they support the drivers' proposal, stating that if the teams are behind it, the FIA "will prepare a detailed proposal to fit all the laps into the hour."

This week's Autosport magazine features an analysis of the proposed qualifying format, with reactions from the different Formula One personnel
