Japanese tyre manufacturer Bridgestone are confident of reverting the qualifying situation in tomorrow's race after losing out to rivals Michelin in today's session.
Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya in the Michelin-shod Williams beat Ferrari rival Michael Schumacher to the fastest ever pole position in Formula One history, with teammate Ralf Schumacher in third place ahead of the second Ferrari of Rubens Barrichello.
Bridgestone's technical managed Hisao Suganuma said he was disappointed to miss out on pole position, but he was optimistic of a stronger showing in tomorrow's race.
"Of course, I am disappointed that we missed out on pole but as always I am optimistic about our tyre performance in race trim, I hope with good reason," said Suganuma at the end of the qualifying session.
"Throughout the practice sessions our new specification has shown improved heat durability - the main issue at Monza - which confirms that we took the right direction in terms of developing new tyres for this race.
"It could be a difficult race but I am confident that we will see an improved story tomorrow."
