David Richards Q&A
BAR has not had a great start to the season, but 10th place on the grid at Imola for Jacques Villeneuve was the first positive sign, backed up 12th - albeit someway behind in terms of time - for Olivier Panis. The performance coincided with the first appearance at a grand prix, in BAR colours, for new technical director Geoff Willis. The former Williams man has already made it clear that there's much to do and the car is behind technically compared to what he's used to. Adam Cooper spoke to team boss David Richards about the latest developments.
"One isn't normally content with 10th place on the grid, but in our circumstances I have to be fairly pleased that they got the best out of the car. Jacques is very positive and the team is very confident. It's no great measure, but it's the first time the team has out-qualified Jordan for nearly two years. But nonetheless we're heading slowly in the right direction."
"I think it's a range of issues. It's not necessarily material issues technically. The team are on their mettle and are more focussed, and they understand what we've got to do now. Geoff [Willis] has started to play a role as well."
"We certainly won't be seeing him at all the races this year, as he's got an awful lot of work to do back at base. It's useful just to see the team in action and understand some of the issues on the ground. My background is not technical, and although I can make observations about people and the way people operate, it's good to have him here."
"We need realism. There's too much smoke and mirrors around F1. I'll say it as it is, and I think Geoff's of a like mind."
"Well, the first couple of months were really about getting to know everybody and understanding the team a little bit better, and work out what was necessary for the future. So it was a real look and see start to the year for me."
"It was much was I'd expected. I've made some significant changes inside the company now. We needed to make the changes, and it seemed the appropriate time to get on with and get things restructured for not just the rest of this year, but the long term as well."
"The front of the grid! We've got a lot of work to do, quite clearly, fundamentally in the design side of the car. I think we've got quite a good race team, with a lot of experience, but we've got to look right back at where we started from."
"I've never heard a driver or a team say the engine's too powerful for them, so the engine's never going to be as good as we want it! It's not quite up to Honda's expectations at the moment, they've got work to do as well."
"Generally yes. But there are lots of other issues around, and I don't think we should look at that in isolation. There are things like testing and all the other aspects. It's one positive step, but I'd like to severely limit testing."
