David Richards Q&A
For the second time in three races David Richards and BAR got a dream result that silenced the critics. Following the life-saving performance by Jenson Button and Takuma Sato in the Suzuka finale last year, the Brit followed up with a third place in Malaysia. The performance confirmed that the winter testing promise was genuine, and will keep the team's partners happy. It was a well-earned podium, and both team and driver did a great job to beat everyone bar Michael Schumacher and Juan Pablo Montoya. Whether it's a genuine pointer to the team's form relative to the other Michelin runners remains to be seen. Jenson was helped by Fernando Alonso's qualifying mishap, and a refuelling glitch for Kimi Raikkonen in the race that helped to promote him to third. He was also on a different tyre to all the other Michelin runners - full credit to him and the team to choosing it and making it work, but it might not be so easy to claim such an advantage in the future. Meanwhile Sato's disappointing start to the season - he spun in both qualifying and the race - must be of some concern. Adam Cooper spoke to Richards at Sepang
"We're one race late aren't we?"
"It was a little difficult! There were a few issues there, but Jenson drove it perfectly, drove to the instructions very well, and was hanging on nicely."
"No, we knew exactly which car it was. He'd already reported a misfire to us a lap earlier. It's unfortunate for Taku. Alright, he did make a mistake early on in the race, but generally he drove very, very quickly. He was set for a point there as well."
"We'd already backed Jenson off a little while earlier when we saw what the positions were, so he was just pacing himself to Barrichello for the last 10 laps."
"It was on performance, and the pit stops were fantastic. The last pit stop was incredible, and that's what really made the difference."
"I think he did. He's started to be far more aggressive, and I think he's taking the fight to them really well."
"Not in my estimation, he's always been there as far as I'm concerned!
"Well, it's always a monkey off your back when you get your first podium. Next target is the first win."
"He made quite a few mistakes over the weekend, but I'm sure he'll learn from those mistakes now. I think we've got to work on that together, and help him through that."
"Well, let's see. Let's not judge him on two races of the season. Let's work together, and see if we can get him up there where he should be."
"It's just good for the confidence. The team knows what we've done, the team knows it's made progress, but if you don't have the scores there to prove it, you're not so sure. I think this weekend proves to everybody, it proves to the sponsors, it proves to Honda, that we have made the progress we've always claimed."
"It's always important to have results. It doesn't matter what the contract situation is - results are results."
"I don't look at it that way. I'd rather look at it as a positive sign that we've got it right, we're learning about the tyres, and we're moving forward."
