WRC Canary Islands: Solberg closes gap to leader Ogier as rain hits

David Coulthard Q&A

By its own admission McLaren has not had the most competitive start to the season, but after a win, a second and third in the opening races, David Coulthard now has a very useful total of 20 points - or 16 more than he had after three GPs last season. The Scot promised that he would be on better form than ever in 2001, and so far he's lived up to that. It's too early to suggest that he will become McLaren's title contender, but if Mika Hakkinen continues to get the worst of the team's luck, DC could have his best chance yet of setting himself up for a championship challenge. At Interlagos he barely put a foot wrong, and together with his engineers came up with the set-up that proved perfect for the difficult conditions on race day. Adam Cooper spoke to him after the Brazilian GP

"I'm delighted, absolutely delighted. We had to make a decision based on the fact that we thought it was going to rain. Do we go to a complete dry set-up and bang the wets on, or do we compromise? We decided to compromise, and it made the car a little bit difficult at the beginning. But I knew I was on one stop, so I thought this isn't looking too bad. Montoya was looking strong, and the Michelins were obviously performing well, but I was waiting for the rain. I wasn't praying for it, because it's always a bit hit and miss in the wet, but I just felt that we had probably positioned ourselves better for those conditions, and clearly we had."

"Yes, I had a lot of fuel on board. I was surprised that although Michael was running lighter, he didn't seem that strong, did he?"

"I saw him bog down, so I knew he stalled. It's hit or miss to get a good start or have a problem with the clutch. That's just the way it worked out. It meant I didn't get away quite as well, but Ralf made a bad start so I still gained a place."

"No, because we actually thought he would be on two stops."

"I thought we were going to be in reasonable shape, so it wasn't so bad."

"Yeah. I said, 'Let's not be the first in,' because at that point you didn't know if it was going to keep coming or not. It turned that it was the wrong thing, and we should have come in, but you have to make a call. The team sees the pit lane and I see the whole track. They said, 'There are a lot of people coming in,' but I thought let's wait and see, because if it suddenly stops maybe it could be like Hockenheim last year, and you could have done two or three laps on the slicks. It's bloody difficult to call."

"I loved it. I couldn't see of course, but everything came clear as I came down to the start/finish, and I just went for it. I think he tried to come back on me in Turn Two, but I just locked the door."

"The conditions were difficult, but I had a good car and I was driving well. If you don't have a good car, you're more likely to make mistakes."

"A few moments, but you're going to have that if you're pushing."

"Yes, I'm very happy with that. We're getting there."
