David Coulthard Q&A

David Coulthard did everything right on the run up to the Monaco GP, and the team has exonerated him from any responsibility for stalling his Mercedes engine at the start of the race. From a seemingly impossible position he recovered two points for fifth place, but he might have done better had he not got caught behind Enrique Bernoldi. He was slowed so much that by lap 25, he was lapped by leader Michael Schumacher. Adam Cooper spoke to the Scot after the race

"Not seriously, because he kept turning in. He was defending that position like it was sixth place and his only point."

"It is tricky, it's frustrating, but you've got to just stay calm, haven't you?"

"I don't know. I'm just too tired to try and think about it, so I don't have time to go through the emotions of the whole thing. The points are behind us now, and we've just got to go to Canada and try and score there. The point is we were quick all weekend. They've got a bit of a lead on us, but we'll do our best."

"That's right. All I can do is my best."

"I think it was Bernoldi in Barcelona. Everyone's got to race, and I'm conscious of not criticising someone who doesn't have the car. But for 17th place... He's let his team mate past, because he's obviously so slow, and the Minardis are pulling away from us, and he proceeds to drive like he's getting some sort of glory holding me up. No way he was ever going to keep in front of me once the pit stops came. So why do it?"

"Yes, there were waved blue flags, but he was on the same lap as me, so he didn't have to move over. The sporting gesture would have been for him to move over."

"Yes. It was quite clear. You were being lapped, you've got to get out of the way, and you shouldn't hinder the leading car. We've had this conversation in the drivers' briefing over the last few races, and I wanted to show that I understand the way that you are supposed to drive, which is that the leading car shouldn't lose any time at all lapping, and the lapped cars should lose the time. And that's what I did."

"The guy was letting people past in places where he could then cut back in front of me. Our race was hindered by what happened at the start, but I think sometimes you have to be sensible. Jacques [Villeneuve] very sensibly let me by when I came to lap him. I'm a lap down and I'm not going to interfere with his race unless has a problem. Eddie took a slightly more stubborn view, although I wouldn't expect anything else from him. I was so far back I was never going to interfere with their races."

"I think two or three years ago I would have pushed him so far into the harbour..."

"I'm looking forward to Canada. It's a good circuit for us."
