Coulthard: We will win races

David Coulthard is confident that he will win races in 2002, but is reserving judgement on his chances of claiming the world championship

Speaking at the end of the first day of testing at Barcelona, he told Autosport.com that he feels in good shape going into his seventh season with McLaren.

"We will win races, but whether it's enough for the championship, we don't know yet," Coulthard said. "We've got the [engine] figures on the dyno and the figures about the car from the windtunnel, but there's nothing like getting out there on the track."

He added that the first few races of the year will provide different challenges to McLaren to test how good its new car is.

"I can't really say anything final until after the first few races because Australia isn't that challenging for the car, although it's a good indication of balance," he said. "Malaysia is about aerodynamics and Brazil is about a bit of both.

"But by the time the European season starts, the seeds are usually sown."
