Coulthard: we can beat Button

McLaren's David Coulthard says his status as top Brit is under no threat from Jenson Button, despite finishing behind the Englishman in the San Marino GP

"Renault beat us but they have done that in only one race out of four," said Coulthard, who dropped behind Button after the first round of pitstops. "I don't know if you can call that competition. Jenson drove a good race but he had a quicker car."

Button's fifth place means he now has eight championship points and lies fourth in the standings. Coulthard is three points behind, having just finished two races this year.

It was the third top six finish in as many races for Button, who described his performance at Imola as 'mega'.

"It's the first time we have beaten McLaren for pace and it feels fantastic," he added. "The good thing with our team is that we keep on progressing. It's going to be difficult to stay ahead though."
