Coulthard Not Worried about F1 Future
McLaren's David Coulthard says he is relaxed about his future in Formula One despite not yet knowing who he will drive for next season.
McLaren's David Coulthard says he is relaxed about his future in Formula One despite not yet knowing who he will drive for next season.
"No, I don't (know), but it doesn't cause me any great stress," Coulthard replied to Atlas F1 when asked if he knew where he will be next year.
"Where I want to be is on the podium tomorrow. There's nothing to say about next year at the moment; we're concentrating on this weekend, on doing the best that I can in the remaining races I have with McLaren. And that's it really, I feel relaxed about the future."
Jaguar looks likely to be his best option, although Williams, the team with which he started his career in 1994, are still to announce their 2005 line-up. Coulthard ruled out retiring at the end of the season should he fail to land a competitive drive.
"I intend to be racing," said the Scot, who will lose his racing seat to Colombian Juan Pablo Montoya, currently driving for Williams.
Team principal Ron Dennis said that if Coulthard failed to find a seat for next season he could still stay at McLaren, even as a test driver.
"David's a free agent and I think what's very clear when you speak to him is that he's following what I believe is the right path - which is to try and get the results on the balance of the season, which will open for him the best opportunities for next year.
"In the event that he doesn't get offered a drive, then at that point [Mercedes-Benz motorsport boss] Norbert [Haug] and I will discuss whether there's a role for David in the team, and also whether we should pursue the options we have with both Alex [Wurz] and Pedro [de la Rosa].
"These are options that we have and these are options that we'll address when the time's appropriate, but certainly as far as David's concerned, he should and is concentrating on getting results in the balance of the season - nothing could help him more."
