Williams ran much bigger brake ducts for Montreal (white dotted line shows extra intake area compared to conventional duct). The team was determined not to be caught out after coming close to running out of discs here last year, when it was only the fact that Ralf Schumacher was stuck behind his brake-conserving brother that allowed him to complete the race. It was ruled illegal by the FIA following the race.

The TF104 ran an extra external duct to cool the brake callipers and increased the size of their normal duct. It was ruled illegal by the FIA following the race.

For the first time this year Ferrari ran without their double flap on the front wing (1) and used a single flap (2) with interesting mounting points, fixed far away from the end and creating the possibility of flex, thereby lowering drag on the straights. The concept of 'flexi-wings' isn't new but isn't used extensively at all tracks. It's best suited to circuits like Montreal with long straights but where the corners are low speed. Flexi wings and high-speed corners are often not a good combination in terms of stability and confidence for the driver.

The BAR heat gun is used to help with the conflict between warming the brakes up sufficiently but not over-heating the tyres on the formation lap. The gun gets the disc temperatures up to 180-deg C. The disc needs to run at around 400-deg C for optimum performance, but this is better than nothing.
