Canada returns to Formula 1 calendar

Canada looks set to make a welcome return to the 2004 Formula 1 calendar. The World Council announced a revised schedule following today's meeting, and Montreal's race has been granted a provisional date

The race would take place one week before the United States Grand Prix at Indianapolis, which moves to June next year. This is provided that "a satisfactory financial agreement is reached with competing teams regarding the absence of tobacco sponsorship."

It is understood that the chances of such a solution being found are good. Meanwhile, in the only other changes to the provisional calendar announced last month, the San Marino Grand Prix moves back to a traditional April date to make way for the trip to Canada. The Nurburgring's race will not, as planned, go ahead in chilly April, but moves to late May.

The Canadian race, should it go ahead, will once again co-incide with the Le Mans 24 Hours. The Belgian Grand Prix at Spa-Francorchamps is now definitely set to go ahead, with politics concerning tobacco branding having been fully settled.
