Button Surprised by Renault's Decision

Briton Jenson Button said on Saturday that Renault's decision to replace him with Fernando Alonso for 2003 came as a surprise.

Briton Jenson Button said on Saturday that Renault's decision to replace him with Fernando Alonso for 2003 came as a surprise.

The 22-year-old was rumoured to be set to lose his drive with the Enstone-based team to Spaniard Alonso, the current test driver, but Button claimed he was still somewhat shocked to learn he has been ditched.

"Yes, slightly, because this season has been good and the team has done a terrific job," Button said when asked if he was shocked. "I think Jarno and I have worked well as teammates. So, yes, I did have a feeling of slight shock at the news."

He added that he was told of the decision after the British Grand Prix two weeks ago.

"I can tell you exactly," he said. "It was the day after the British Grand Prix at Silverstone. That was when I realised I wasn't going to be here next season."

The young Briton is playing his cards close to his chest concerning his future, but expects to be able to make an announcement next week.

"I cannot say exactly, but I think I am in good shape for next year," he said. "I am looking forward to the opportunity. Obviously, at this time, I am not able to say any more, certainly not for a few days. But I know what I am doing and where I am going."

Button, who made his debut in 2000 with Williams before switching to the Benetton-Renault team, admitted that the last two years have helped develop him as a driver.
