Button slams da Matta

Monaco Grand Prix runner-up Jenson Button has hit out at Toyota's Cristiano da Matta for holding him up in Sunday's race, costing the BAR-Honda driver a shot at his maiden Formula 1 victory

Button finished less than half a second behind race winner Jarno Trulli on Sunday, and said that the time lost behind da Matta after his first pitstop was crucial. However, they were racing for position at the time, so da Matta was well within his rights to keep Button behind.

"I was really struggling with traffic," said Button. "I was sitting behind da Matta for three-and-a-half laps. I have never seen anything like it, I really haven't. They took a lap to get their blue flags out, but he had blue flags for two-and-a-half laps. I'll be having a word with him afterwards because it's just not on. It was pathetic."

When told the Brazilian had been penalised for ignoring blue flags later in the race, Button replied: "Was he? Good."

Toyota's technical director Mike Gascoyne complained that da Matta didn't receive the same treatment as certain drivers from top teams did.

"I have to say the inconsistency in blue flags is appalling," said Gascoyne. "Cristiano got a blue flag, moved over at the next corner and was then given a penalty. Ralf Schumacher was a lap behind in front of us for two or three laps, nothing was done and this has cost us points. There seems to be one rule for those at the front and one rule for the rest of us."
