Button confident despite fourth

BAR-Honda's Jenson Button is optimistic for Sunday's French Grand Prix despite lining up on the second row of the grid. The root of his confidence lies in the increasingly impressive BAR 006, which the Briton claims is even better than it was two weeks ago at Indianapolis, where team-mate Takuma Sato took his first podium

Button was the first driver to break the 1m14s barrier in Saturday's final qualifying, a time that looked certain for the front row. That was until Renault's Fernando Alonso stuck his nose into the action and took the top spot at the team's home race. But the Renault effort came as no surprise to Button.

"We knew Renault would try everything to get on the front row," he said. "They did it with one car but not with the other. Fourth isn't bad, and let's hope our strategy works in the race. Our main competition is Alonso and Michael."

The Renaults have been renowned for their fantastic starts this year, but with a car that has made another step forward in just two weeks, Button is confident he will be able to do some overtaking damage on the first lap.

"I'm used to having Renaults starting alongside me, but at least here if they get me at the start, I can get them back on the first lap," he said. "Coming here, we have the same confidence as we did at Indy, and we've moved the car on a bit. The car is even better than it was at Indianapolis, so we're confident of a good race."
