Burti on pole for Jaguar seat

Jaguar test driver Luciano Burti has moved into pole position to take Johnny Herbert's place in the team for 2001, according to this week's Autosport magazine

Champ Car ace Dario Franchitti had been a near-certainty to take the drive, but sources in the USA say he has decided to re-commit to the CART FedEx series.

The Scot tested for the team last month, but did not set a competitive time during two days of running at Silverstone. However, there are suggestions that Franchitti will test for a second time before he and the team make a final decision. Jaguar Racing chairman Neil Ressler refused to discuss the issue at last weekend's German Grand Prix.

Brazilian Burti has impressed the Jaguar Racing team in his testing role and as a stand-in for Eddie Irvine at last month's Austrian Grand Prix, where he finished a creditable 11th in the often unreliable R1 chassis.

Prost's Jean Alesi has also been linked to a seat with the 'Big Cat', but has stated that he will not make any decisions on his future until the fate of the Prost team, which is linked to a buy-out by a Canadian consortium, is decided.
