Brabham star guest at Gold Cup

Three-time world champion Sir Jack Brabham will be the guest of honour when Oulton Park stages a revival of its famous Gold Cup meeting later this month

The Australian won the Gold Cup four times when it was run for Formula 1 cars at the Cheshire circuit, claiming victory in 1957, '64, '66 and '67. He is returning to Oulton on August 25/26 to help celebrate the circuit's 50th anniversary.

"For me, Oulton Park holds so many wonderful memories," said Brabham. "When you won there, you really knew you'd driven well - it was one of the most challenging circuits I ever raced on and I'm pleased it has been allowed to retain much of its original character. I'm sure drivers today continue to get a real buzz out of racing there."

The Gold Cup was run annually between '54 and '93. This year's revival will include a host of historic machinery ranging from F1, Formula 5000, Formula 2, Formula 3, GTs, saloons and sportscars.

Brabham said: "The Gold Cup was always a meeting that everybody attended and I'm sure, with the new format it is embracing for some of the most spectacular cars that ever raced, it will once more draw a very large crowd over the two days."

The Gold Cup title used to be attributed to a single race. For the revival, the whole event has taken on the name, with gold cups being awarded to winners of every race.
