Berger tells Wurz to take Jag drive

Gerhard Berger has told fellow Austrian Alex Wurz that he should jump at the chance to make his Formula 1 race return, should Jaguar give him the chance to replace Antonio Pizzonia on the team's driver line-up

Jaguar has admitted that Pizzonia's drive with the team is under threat, and McLaren test driver Wurz, who has not raced since 2000, has emerged as the front-runner for the seat. Berger believes that it's too good an opportunity to refuse.

"There's no question about it if he's given the chance," Berger told the APA news agency. "The question is much more whether there is actually a place for him. It's not the first time we've heard this."

Since losing his Benetton drive, Wurz has become a key member of the McLaren team in his current test role, and is due to complete much of the early testing of the outfit's new MP4-18A car.

Wurz's father reckons that he should stay with McLaren rather than take a risk in joining Jaguar. "Jaguar have made Alex an offer and a decision will be made this week," said Franz Wurz. "I will give him hints but this will be Alex's decision. He is currently weighing the pros and cons. We last spoke on Sunday night and I told him that if I were him I would play it safe and stay with McLaren. But that's probably my age talking."
