Barrichello signs two-year Ferrari deal

Rubens Barrichello will stay at Ferrari until the end of 2004, following the team's decision to extend his deal beyond the end of this season

Ferrari confirmed the decision in a two-line press release today (Thursday).

Barrichello was strongly tipped to remain at the Italian team, as predicted in this week's AUTOSPORT magazine. But the length of the new deal is more of a surprise.

A one-year extension to keep him at the team until the end of next year was expected. But the commitment for 2004 is a huge confidence boost to Barrichello, who has won just a single race for the Formula 1 pace-setter since joining the squad in 2000.

Earlier in the season, press reports in Italy suggested that Barrichello was to be replaced in favour of new blood. At this year's Brazilian Grand Prix, he denied that a rift had grown between himself and the team over his treatment from Ferrari's management. He also rubbished reports that he would only be kept on if he accepted a pay-cut.

Sauber's young charger Felipe Massa was rumoured to be heading towards Maranello in a straight swap with Barrichello. But in recent weeks, it became clear that the 29-year-old was still very much in favour at the team. Not only did he challenge Michael Schumacher for pace in qualifying at the past two races, the team also spoke out in his favour.

Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo said: "I don't see anyone around who is free and who could be a big champion who could come to Ferrari."

Schumacher has also made it clear that he favours Barrichello. His relationship with the former Stewart ace is said to be among the best he has enjoyed with any team-mate.
