Barrichello pays tribute to team-mate

Ferrari driver Rubens Barrichello has paid tribute to his team-mate Michael Schumacher after the five-time world champion won the San Marino Grand Prix the day after his mother had died

The Brazilian driver, who has just completed a three-day test at Mugello as the Ferrari team assesses the readiness of its new F2003-GA chassis, said he could empathise with Schumacher and admired the German's decision to take part in the race. Schumacher and his brother Ralf flew back to Cologne immediately after qualifying to be by their mother's side and returned to Imola in time to take part in the race.

"I admired him for taking part in the race because it was a tough decision," said Barrichello, "probably one of the toughest decisions he has ever made.

"When we were driving, it was okay, but when we were together that was difficult as I felt sorry for Michael. We have grown closer and got to know one another better and better over the years. Everyone knows how close I am to my family, so I really felt sorry for him. I told him I was praying for his family."

Barrichello finished third in Imola but said that his event was completely overshadowed by Schumacher's bereavement.
