Barrichello: 'I've done my bit'
Rubens Barrichello hopes that the help he has given to Ferrari and Michael Schumacher is enough to secure him an extension of his contract, which expires at the end of this season
The Brazilian has won just one race in two years with the team, the 2000 German GP, but has amassed an impressive 18 podium positions. Many of these have been at the expense of Schumacher's title rivals and this, together with his role in helping improve the car, is the basis for his confidence.
"I have done my bit in the last couple of years in winning the championship - not just by scoring points but also sorting out the car for Michael," he told Autosport.com.
"It's easy for everyone to think the team is so very strong with Michael, Ross [Brawn] and Rory [Byrne]. And that if they are still together then regardless of whoever drives the second car, Ferrari will still win both championships. But I feel it is different. I am also a guy that takes care of what is around me. I love to help with the set-up of the car. Testing means not just going around in circles, but sorting out problems."
Rumours of possible replacements have been circulating, with Juan Pablo Montoya and Felipe Massa tipped as possible successors. But Barrichello laughs off suggestions that his fate has already been sealed.
"I see there is a possibility that I will stay. I think we've had our ups and downs, but it is a happy marriage and I like working with them. I think they like working with me and when they ask me about the car there is a good amount of respect."
