Barcelona, day 3: Ferraris crash
Ferrari duo Michael Schumacher and Rubens Barrichello continued to set the pace during testing at Barcelona in Spain today (Wednesday), despite the team being forced to pack up early after both damaged their cars in separate crashes
Schumacher went off at the 140mph Turn 11 at the end of the morning session, badly damaging the back end of his F2001. Later in the day, Barrichello crashed heavily at Turn Nine, and with no spare chassis available, the team was forced to abandon the test. Neither driver was hurt, with Barrichello's best time proving unbeatable for anyone else.
Sauber's Nick Heidfeld continued to impress to be the fastest non-Ferrari for the second day in a row. The German reported that he was very happy with progress in the new C21 after completing a successful race simulation.
Ralf Schumacher, sixth fastest today, tried out his special glasses to help him decide whether he should wear the specs in races this year. He was slower than Williams test driver Marc Gene, but quicker than team-mate Juan Pablo Montoya, who never managed a proper run today.
Rising German Marcel Lasee put in a good performance as he continued his maiden Formula 1 test with Jordan. He was just behind Sauber rookie Felipe Massa who spun in the afternoon while attempting a race simulation.
Jarno Trulli reported some disatisfaction with his Michelin tyres as he continues to acclimatise himself with the Renault team. He is due to have his first run in the new R202 chassis tomorrow.
While Schumacher and Barrichello were crashing in Spain, Ferrari test driver Luca Badoer was racking up more miles at Mugello in Italy. The Italian managed 41 laps this afternoon as he tried out new experimental components, fitted to an F2001 chassis. Badoer will continue running at the circuit tomorrow.
