Barcelona day 2: Coulthard quickest
The second day of Formula 1 testing at Barcelona today (Tuesday) might have been affected by rain, which hampered most of the new car and driver combinations, but McLaren's David Coulthard set the pace before the heavens opened
Coulthard topped the times with a 1m20.816s lap during his second day of running on Michelin tyres on his 2001-spec McLaren, four-tenths ahead of the Williams-BMW of Ralf Schumacher. They were well clear of Jaguar's Pedro de la Rosa and British American Racing test driver Anthony Davidson, who also set their times in the dry.
Of the new cars, Allan McNish was the only driver to set a dry time in his Toyota TF102. The Scotsman put in a lap more than five seconds behind Coulthard, before locking his rear wheels when he changed down to first gear as he returned to the pits. The all-new car skidded to a halt and had to be pushed back to the garage.
Finnish sensation Kimi Raikkonen got behind the wheel of a McLaren for the first time this morning. The young Finn managed to complete one lap in the dry, which was good for the sixth quickest time of the day.
Jarno Trulli, who switches from Jordan to the Renault Sport team for 2002, drove last year's Benetton which now carries Renault's yellow and white colours. He missed the dry running and was 12th quickest in the damp conditions of the afternoon. New team-mate Jenson Button was stranded in the pits for much of the best track conditions and only completed 10 laps.
Ferrari's new test driver Luciano Burti took to the track in an F1 car for the first time since his 150mph shunt at Spa last September. He showed no ill effects and was half a second shy of fellow Ferrari tester Luca Badoer, who was seventh fastest.
Olivier Panis put another 32 laps on BAR's new 004 chassis and is due to hand over the reigns to team-mate Jacques Villeneuve tomorrow, who says his future with the team hangs on the performance of the car. Panis set the 13th quickest time.
Eddie Irvine gave Jaguar's new R3 chassis a short debut of three laps before switching to last year's car. He ended the day with the slowest time in a modified R2.
Burti, McNish and Sauber's newboy Felipe Massa all suffered spins during the day, all without damage or injury.
