BAR Happy with Start of Arbitration Process

The BAR Formula One team said they are pleased the arbitration process over Jenson Button's contract is finally underway.

The BAR Formula One team said they are pleased the arbitration process over Jenson Button's contract is finally underway.

Button's Formula One future moved closer to a resolution on Monday after Williams lodged a contract they hope will confirm the driver's switch from BAR. The team had deposited the necessary paperwork with Formula One's contract recognition board (CRB).

Depending on the date of a hearing, yet to be decided, the CRB could rule on the matter by the end of September.

BAR, who do not want Button to leave, have also lodged a contract. Williams' move will now leave in the hands of the Swiss-based board the decision as to which team has the right to the 24-year-old's services next year.

"BAR understands that WilliamsF1 has lodged a contract between itself and Jenson Button for 2005 with the Contract Recognition Board (CRB), and this now sets in motion the correct procedure for arbitration," said BAR in a statement today.

"BAR is pleased that, after weeks of speculation, the legitimate process of arbitration is being followed. The team places its faith in the CRB's judgment over the matter and will abide by the outcome.

"In the event that the CRB upholds BAR's contract with Jenson Button for the 2005 season, the team very much looks forward to working with him, and taking another step forward in its ambitious plans to win the World Championship."

The delay in filing a contract had triggered fears that the dispute between the two teams could rumble on well beyond the end of the current season in October and end in a battle through the law courts.
