The Williams driver, winner at the Imola circuit last year for his first career victory, was unable to match the pace of the Ferraris of Michael Schumacher and his teammate Rubens Barrichello despite being tipped as one of the favourites before the start of the weekend.
The young German, who was nearly 20 seconds behinds his brother at the finish line, claimed the Grove-based squad will have to work hard to be able to be a match for World Champions Ferrari.
"It was the best we could do," the younger Schumacher said after the race. "Our car was very good today, the team did a great job. We did the best with what we had but certainly it looks like it is not good enough and we will have to improve if we want to win races."
Schumacher finished right ahead of teammate Juan Pablo Montoya, and the German now trails his brother Michael by 14 points in the Championship standings.
