A brake failure in his Prost car was to blame for Tomas Enge's accident during the final moments of qualifying at the Indianapolis circuit.
The Czech driver, competing in his second Formula One Grand Prix with the French outfit, lost control of his car with four minutes remaining in the session, hitting the tyre wall.
Enge, who finished the session in 21st place after walking away unhurt, was disappointed with his performance.
"Everything was going quite well but in my last flying lap, I had a brake failure and went off," explained Enge. "I could not prevent from crashing into the tyre walls. I feel all the more disappointed as I achieved a very good first intermediate on this lap.
"For sure, starting tomorrow's race from the back of the grid will give us even more work, but the important thing is that - fortunately - my accident was not too bad, we will be able to fix the car and I am glad I can race tomorrow."
