Massa Completes Mugello Test with Sauber

Brazilian driver Felipe Massa wrapped up on Wednesday a two-day test with the Sauber team, with who the 20-year old made his Formula One debut on Tuesday at the Mugello circuit.

The European F3000 champion completed a total of 101 laps around the Italian circuit, setting a fastest lap of 1:23.790. Massa spent the two days getting used to the Formula One car, and the Sauber team were pleased with the young Brazilian's progress.

"Felipe had a steep learning curve to climb during this test," said technical director Willy Rampf. "He began on Tuesday just acclimatising himself to the power, braking and cornering ability of a Formula One car, which is of course very different to the Formula 3000 cars he is used to driving in the F3000 Italian Championship.

"It was a pleasure to work with him. He was very focused and we were pleased that he did not fall into the trap that is common with inexperienced drivers, of trying to run too long on each outing. His times came down very nicely, and given the conditions of the day he was able to lap faster than Michael Schumacher or Rubens Barrichello did at the test here in August."

The Swiss team are currently looking for a replacement for Finn Kimi Raikkonen, who will move to McLaren to replace Mika Hakkinen in 2002.

"I am quite happy with this opportunity and the way I've been welcomed by the entire team," Massa said. "I felt very at home. The car seemed to be a bit nervous on fresh tyres, but the engine power and the brakes are quite amazing. For sure, I have a lot to learn about F1 and the C20, but I liked the speed I' ve been getting used to it."

German Nick Heidfeld will replace Massa at Mugello for the final day of testing.
