Williams driver Juan Pablo Montoya has predicted that he will fight for the 2002 drivers' title if he is not hit by bad luck like this year.
Montoya, making his Formula One debut this season, has yet to win a Grand Prix despite leading some races this year, but he believes he has proven he has the ability to drive to victories and challenge Michael Schumacher for the title next year.
"I don't know whether I will be World Champion next year, but I'll have a shot at it. The car is going to be competitive," Montoya said. "I think I have shown I can win, and it would just be nice to get it, but time will decide when it comes."
Montoya has suffered because of problems with his car while German teammate Ralf Schumacher has recorded three victories this year. The Colombian is convinced he can win races with a change of luck.
"I think if we have a competitive and reliable car and if we have a bit of luck, then I think we should be alright," he added. "This year I think the luck has been against me really bad and it is frustrating. I had a couple of chances to win races, and both of them have been thrown away not to my fault."
