Anthony Davidson Q&A
BAR third driver Anthony Davidson made a strong impression in his Friday running in both Australia and Malaysia, but he has really looked good in Bahrain so far. He was among the quickest from the start of practice, finishing the first session in third behind the two Ferraris, and taking the same position in the afternoon, behind Rubens Barrichello and Juan Pablo Montoya. He was nearly 0.4s ahead of team-mate Jenson Button, and 1.2s up on second driver Takuma Sato. Of course the whole point of third drivers is that they can push harder on Friday, and Davidson did more laps than anyone else in both sessions, but nevertheless his good performances are a reminder that he deserves a fulltime seat. Adam Cooper spoke to the Brit straight after practice
"It's really good, and I've really enjoyed being here so far. They've done a great job with the circuit, and the facilities are excellent. But there's absolutely nothing around - it's just sand. It's really strange to be here in the middle of nowhere, quite literally, with this awesome race circuit to drive around. It's really good fun."
"Every lap we did more and more rubber went down, and every lap you did you'd find chunks of time. The circuit itself is quite undulating for the middle of the desert, which is quite surprising. They've done a good job with that. It's got some heavy braking, it's really hard on brakes, and the dust doesn't help that. But so car we haven't seen much dust flying around, so the circuit has been improving all day."
"I did a long run on one set of tyres that we are seriously considering racing, and the run was really good, we're really pleased. The Ferraris have a slight advantage at the moment, so we all have to work harder to beat them."
"You say a different agenda, and I know what you mean, but I can actually say on my mum's life that I was on the same fuel as everyone else. I really want to put that forward, to stop the doubting. I was actually up there, that was a genuine time in the first session. We tried going a little bit lower in the second session, but not that much. In the end it was very good. It's been a really positive day, we've learned a lot with the tyres, and I've been genuinely quick."
"I think so. But the problem is that everyone assumes that we're running low fuel. If you look, Zonta was up there as well in the first session. It's just that you get more laps, and that helps."
"Definitely doing more laps helps, especially on a circuit that no one else knows either. That's really been a big help. The other thing that helps is the circuit just gets quicker and quicker."
