Alonso targets home win after pole

World champion Fernando Alonso is aiming to become the first Spanish driver to win his home Grand Prix tomorrow after clinching pole position on Saturday

Alonso's second pole in a row, and 11th of his career, left him perfectly placed to score his third victory of the season and to celebrate the 50th Spanish Grand Prix in style.

The Renault driver will share the front row with teammate Giancarlo Fisichella, while Michael Schumacher, winner of the last two races will be third.

Alonso leads Schumacher by 13 points in the championship after five rounds.

"First pole position in Spain and for sure there's a great atmosphere for the team and me, especially," said Alonso. "We all enjoyed this qualifying with the people in the grandstands."

The Spanish driver, however, is under no illusions that the race will be easy to win, especially considering Ferrari's form.

"The times were really close on this circuit. We test a lot over the winter, so it was tough. The main worry was to go through Q2 and Q3.

"Ferrari and Michael are strong again this weekend but we have to concentrate on our job to take the maximum from our car," said Alonso. "Our worst case is second place in the race and if we keep this consistency then it's good for the championship.

"We have to concentrate on our job and when Ferrari is too strong for us we have to take second, but tomorrow we have to think victory is possible."

Fisichella was also confident Renault could fight for victory on Sunday.

"It is nice to be here and Renault's performance was very good today," said the Italian. "We expect to be really competitive. First and second on the grid is a great result and we are really optimistic we have a good package."
