Alonso Takes Second Pole of the Season - Hungary

Spaniard Fernando Alonso claimed the second pole position of his career after producing a stunning lap to top the qualifying times for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Spaniard Fernando Alonso claimed the second pole position of his career after producing a stunning lap to top the qualifying times for the Hungarian Grand Prix.

Alonso was faultless as he added to his pole in Malaysia with a masterful drive in his Renault to finish ahead of Williams-BMW driver Ralf Schumacher by 0.256 seconds.

Jaguar's Mark Webber equalled his pervious best qualifying performance as he secured third place on the grid ahead of Championship contender Juan Pablo Montoya, of Williams-BMW. Rubens Barrichello will begin from fifth for Ferrari with Renault's Jarno Trulli sixth after the Italian was unable to repeat his exploits of setting the pace on Friday.

Kimi Raikkonen was impressive running early in the field to go seventh quickest ahead of Michael Schumacher's Ferrari, with McLaren's David Coulthard and Toyota driver Olivier Panis completing the top ten.

Zsolt Baumgartner, the home driver replacing Ralph Firman, was first out on the track and completed a trouble-free lap in his first experience of qualifying and set a lap time of 1:26.678.

Toyota's Cristiano da Matta moved ahead after lowering the best time by more than two-and-a-half seconds, before Minardi's Nicolas Kiesa ended up bottom following a disappointing laptime.

Minardi driver Jos Verstappen went three-tenths quicker than Baumgartner, whose new teammate Giancarlo Fisichella took top spot with a lap time 0.256 seconds quicker than da Matta. Justin Wilson, of Jaguar, moved into top spot by 0.066 seconds and BAR-Honda's Jacques Villeneuve slotted into fourth after losing time in the final sector.

Villeneuve's teammate Briton Jenson Button also lost time in the second half of his lap and set the third best time, before Raikkonen went almost a second quicker than Wilson.

Heinz-Harald Frentzen made a mistake early in his run and finished off the pace, but his Sauber teammate Nick Heidfeld took second place ahead of Wilson - although 0.879 seconds down on Raikkonen.

Michael Schumacher was unable to take top spot as he ended one-tenth down on Raikkonen after losing time in the second sector. Montoya then produced a good lap to replace Raikkonen at the top of the timesheets, more than half-a-second quicker than the Finn, with Toyota's Panis slotting into fourth place.

Alonso put together a sensational lap to blitz the time of Montoya by almost five-tenths of a second, but Barrichello was unable to continue the trend as he set the same time as Montoya.

Coulthard had been up on Alonso after the first sector but lost a lot of time in the middle sector and could only set the sixth best time behind Michael Schumacher.

Jaguar's Webber went second quickest with a quick lap despite running wide, only to be nudged down a place by Ralf Schumacher with Trulli taking sixth.
